As a self described unicorn pixie, I’ve always enjoyed planting seeds. Magic beans. My most recent venture is random acts of magneting.
At first glance, it’s just me, five rainbow ducks, and a trail of glitter. Which, admittedly, is already a pretty solid life philosophy.
This little design carries a lot of what I’ve been trying to put into the world. Raise Hope. Spark Joy. Stay Punk.
Hope isn’t passive. It’s something we cultivate and raise in ourselves first, then in each other. Joy doesn’t ignore hardship. It helps us survive it. And in doing so, we spark a light in the dark for others to see. My punk is choosing authenticity, kindness, and possibility in a world that rewards conformity and turns a blind eye to cruelty.
The ducks are a tribute to one of the most unexpectedly moving experiences I had this year: serving as Honorary Duckmaster at @peabodymemphis thanks to the generosity and spirit of Duckmaster @kenon_walker .
In a lobby full of travelers, Memphis locals, and families, he chose me. Not the obvious choice in my fedora, tie, and power clashing dapper duds.
In a complicated cultural moment, he had faith that his light and mine would beam brightly enough for all to enjoy. Undeniable.
Beneath the bow ties, visual activism, and joyful resistance I sometimes wonder: Do I belong here exactly as I am? That moment answered it.
‘Yes. Come lead the ducks with me.’ Different paths. Same direction.
The five ducks have become a symbol for me. A reminder that none of us gets through life alone. We don’t always have our ducks in a row, but we can leave a path for others. Sometimes that path is made of courage. Sometimes curiosity. Sometimes it sparkles with a trail of glitter litter. Evidence of the road less travelled.
My visual activism has always been about creating a world where more people feel safe enough to embody their difference with pride and joy. To be seen. To belong exactly as they are.
Difference isn’t something to overlook. It’s something to make room for.
Raise hope.
Spark joy.
Stay punk.
And don’t quack it up.
